The Meaning Series

Here is a common experience. You read your star sign, recognise almost none of it, and quietly decide astrology is not for you. The reason may be less about scepticism and more about the sign you have been reading.

Your sun sign describes your central identity. Your rising sign describes how you meet the world, the first impression you create and the aesthetic you reach for almost instinctively. For a conversation about personal style and jewellery, that makes it the more revealing placement.

Sun, Moon, Rising

These three placements form the clearest introduction to a birth chart, but each answers a different question.

Your sun sign

Your central identity, sense of purpose and the qualities you are learning to embody. It can be calculated from your birth date alone, which is why horoscope columns use it.

Your moon sign

Your private and emotional self. It speaks to how you process feelings, what brings comfort and the version of you that close people tend to know best.

Your rising sign

Also called the ascendant. It describes your first impression, the way you enter a room and the aesthetic you gravitate towards before overthinking it. This is the style sign.

How to Find Your Rising Sign

Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was appearing on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It can change approximately every two hours, depending on the date and location, so accurate birth details matter.

  1. Find your birth time as accurately as possible. Check any official record you have and ask family members who may remember.
  2. Note your complete birth date.
  3. Use the town or city where you were born, since the horizon changes by location.
  4. Enter all three details into a reputable birth chart calculator. Look for “Ascendant” or “ASC” in the result.

If your birth time is genuinely unavailable, it is better to leave your rising sign unknown than to guess. Your sun, moon and Venus placements can still offer plenty to explore.

Fire Risings

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius enter the room with warmth, movement and presence. Their jewellery tends to feel immediate rather than overly considered.

  • Aries rising. Fast decisions and high contrast. One strong piece, worn with conviction and very little fuss.
  • Leo rising. Impossible to miss and entirely comfortable with it. Statement gold, sunlight motifs and an open neckline.
  • Sagittarius rising. Relaxed and slightly undone. Mismatched pieces gathered through travel, memory and experience.

Earth Risings

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn favour pieces that feel intentional, tactile and built to return to. Their style is often quieter, but rarely accidental.

  • Taurus rising. Warm, tactile and expensive looking without trying. Substantial gold, smooth stones and pieces worn constantly.
  • Virgo rising. Immaculate and understated. Fine proportions, considered details and nothing decorative without purpose.
  • Capricorn rising. Structured and enduring. One signature piece worn for years, chosen with the long term in mind.

Air Risings

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius approach jewellery as a visual language. They restyle, rebalance and choose the piece that makes the familiar feel new again.

  • Gemini rising. Changes the look often and enjoys it. Fine, layerable chains that can be rearranged endlessly.
  • Libra rising. Balanced, harmonious and naturally well styled. Paired pieces, soft symmetry and an instinct for proportion.
  • Aquarius rising. Unmistakably individual. The unusual shape, the unexpected detail and the piece nobody else thought to choose.

Water Risings

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces tend to wear meaning privately. Their most important pieces are often chosen for memory, intuition or the feeling they hold.

  • Cancer rising. Soft, approachable and quietly sentimental. Lockets, moon shapes and pieces connected to a person or moment.
  • Scorpio rising. Controlled, magnetic and private. Dark stones and one hidden talisman worn close to the skin.
  • Pisces rising. Dreamy, fluid and difficult to pin down. Flowing chains, soft light and celestial motifs.

One More Placement Worth Knowing

If you want to go one layer deeper, look up your Venus sign. Venus is associated with taste, attraction and what you find beautiful, which is not always the same as what suits you or what you actually wear.

The gap between the two can be revealing. A Capricorn rising with Venus in Leo may dress with restraint while quietly wanting the enormous gold pendant. Most people recognise some version of that split in themselves.

Your rising sign does not tell you what to buy. It helps explain why certain pieces already feel like you.

What to Do With This

Use it as a description, not an instruction. Astrology is most interesting when it gives language to instincts you already have, rather than rules for what belongs in your jewellery box.

Where it can genuinely help is with the pieces you own but never wear. They may reflect an aesthetic you admire through your Venus sign, but not the presentation you naturally inhabit through your rising sign.

For a sign-by-sign guide based on the zodiac itself, our Zodiac Talisman Index explores all twelve signs in more detail.

Which Sign Should You Wear?

The Written In The Stars collection includes all twelve signs, each with its constellation on the front and zodiac symbol engraved on the reverse.

Wear your sun sign if you want to mark the identity you know and share most easily. Choose your rising sign if you want the piece to reflect how you move through the world and the style you instinctively return to. There is no wrong placement to keep close.

If you would rather wear an intention than an astrological placement, the I Am collection gives you the freedom to choose according to the energy you want to carry now.
